Chronic Lung Infections

Lung infections are common. We see them pop up most often around the cold and flu season. Usually, a common cold clears up in a few weeks with rest and the occasional antibiotic or other medication.

When it persists for weeks or months on end, it could be an indicator of a more complex or uncommon infection or other medical condition. If you notice a cough that just won’t go away; have unexplained difficulty breathing; or seem to have recurrent respiratory infections, schedule an appointment with Austin Pulmonary Consultants. You could have a chronic lung infection that requires more intensive treatment and specialized care.Austin Pulmonary Consultants’ office, we will perform a thorough history and physical exam and may order additional testing including imaging occasional bronchoscopy or an inspection of the airways in order to obtain a culture.

We use the results to confirm the infection and to discuss the best course of treatment with you.

While early treatment will help you beat a chronic lung infection, your best bet is to follow preventive practices.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; wash your hands often; try to avoid coming into contact with people who have a cold, flu, or other infection; and get your annual vaccines, particularly if you already have a chronic condition like diabetes or belong to an age-vulnerable population (i.e., very young or aged).
