Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a specific form of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Austin Pulmonary Consultants diagnoses the condition based on a thorough history and physical exam, imaging, and occasionally lung biopsy.

We recommend evaluation if you’re concerned about IPF as it is both chronic and progressive. Over time, the lung tissue becomes fibrotic or thickened resulting in shortness of breath and frequently a chronic dry cough. While no cure currently exists for idiopathic pulmonary disease, medical care and management plans will relieve your symptoms and slow down progression of the disease. Most treatment plans involve medication, lifestyle changes, supplemental oxygen if needed, and occasionally pulmonary rehabilitation.

Austin Pulmonary Consultants follows your condition closely because it often exhibits symptoms unique to individual patients. Some people with IPF lose lung function quickly while others see a gradual worsening of the condition.

Almost all patients with IPF struggle with a chronic cough and shortness of breath.

By monitoring those symptoms, we can develop better treatment plans for your disease and ensure your overall health.
