Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that causes granulomas, or clumps of cells, to form in the lungs and other organs. We still aren’t sure of the exact cause for sarcoidosis, but some researchers think it arises as the body attempts to counteract a virus, bacteria, or foreign chemical. They also suspect genetics may perform a role.
Because sarcoidosis forms in different organs, the symptoms vary. Sarcoidosis of the lungs frequently causes shortness of breath and a chronic cough as previously mentioned.
Sarcoidosis involving the skin can produce tiny bumps or nodules. Sarcoidosis involving the eyes may cause blurry vision.
Treatment plans vary by the location of the disease and individual patient. Some patients see sarcoidosis disappear on its own.
Other patients require only a brief course of treatment, typically with steroids and yet others develop chronic disease. Austin Pulmonary Consultants monitors the condition and treatment closely to prevent disease progression.
